Services
Specialist services
Thirty years of handling British Art Pottery means I can tell you things about a piece that a photograph never will. Whether you're buying at auction, need a valuation, or want your collection properly recorded, I can put that experience to work for you.
Auction agent
Buying at auction, with a specialist on your side
Auction catalogues rarely tell the whole story. Restoration can be invisible in photographs, condition reports are often brief, and once the hammer falls the piece is yours, whatever it turns out to be. For many years I have acted as an agent for private collectors, inspecting and buying on their behalf at sales across the UK and overseas.
What I can do for you
- Inspect the piece in person before the sale, checking for restoration, damage and later alterations that photographs miss.
- Give you an honest opinion on condition, quality and what the piece is really worth.
- Agree a bidding limit with you, so you never pay more than it deserves.
- Bid on your behalf, in the saleroom, online or by telephone, so you don't have to be there.
- Arrange collection and insured shipping once the piece is yours.
When I represent you on a lot, I work for you alone: I never bid on that lot for my own stock. You have a specialist firmly on your side of the saleroom.
Valuations
Valuations
A specialist valuation from someone who buys and sells these pieces every day. I provide written valuations of British Art Pottery for:
- Probate, when an estate includes pottery that needs a reliable value, prepared on the open market value basis HMRC requires
- Insurance, so your collection is properly covered
- Family division, where items are being shared between relatives
- Selling, so you know what a piece is worth before deciding how to sell it
Each piece is examined and described, with its condition noted, and valued in a clear written report. All my valuation and advisory work is covered by professional indemnity insurance. I'm happy to discuss what you need before we begin.
Collections
Cataloguing and managing your collection
A well-recorded collection is easier to insure, enjoy, add to and, one day, pass on or sell. I can help you:
- Catalogue your collection, with a description, condition notes and provenance for each piece
- Keep the record up to date as you buy and sell
- Shape the collection over time, advising on gaps worth filling and pieces worth upgrading
- Plan ahead, so your family knows what you have and what it's worth
